Lecturer Bargaining Update: Bargaining Recap for 4/12/2024

We are at a critical point in our bargaining campaign. Last Friday, admin delivered a salary counter that put 2.5% or 10% over 4 years in Flint and Dearborn with 6% in year one and 21.5% over 4 years in Ann Arbor. They have maintained the $500 lump sum to Dearborn and Flint lecturers each Fall for 4 years. And we’ve still seen no change in the Major Review minimums or longevity.

We had some discussion about leapfrogging and have reached some agreement on the concept of including an expanded section on equity increases in the salary article, rather than a separate leapfrogging MOU. Following this discussion our team sent back a packaged proposal that included all remaining proposals in our court. Our proposal was to agree to their last counters on Leaves of Absence and Provisions for Special Case Appointments and drop Leapfrogging, Governance, Childcare, and Housing Committee pending agreement to our salary counter. As this is a package, everything would be back on the table if they don’t agree to it in its entirety.

Our salary counter included minimums of $52,000, $53,000, $54,000, and $56,000 (with $2,000 more for Lecturer IIIs). We held on to the Major Review Minimums that we passed last along with the longevity. In the annuals we proposed 8% for the first 3 years in Ann Arbor & 7% in Dearborn and Flint with lump sum bonuses of $700, $600, $500. In year 4 we proposed 7% increases on all 3 campuses but maintained the $500 lump sum bonus for Dearborn and Flint.

We are fairly confident that admin will not accept this package and we have not yet heard of additional authorization of funds to the Dearborn and Flint campuses, which is why we need to take serious action:

In more positive news, we were able to come to tentative agreement on the pilot for an International Lecturer Assistance fund, DEI Related Initiatives for Lecturers, and Professional Development. We’ve increased the funds in both the Inclusive Teaching PD fund and the Professional Development fund alongside the amount that each lecturer is eligible to receive.
