MICHAEL MONTGOMERY

Dearborn, Department of Health and Human Services

Lecturer-Intermittent

What is your area of specialty?

Philanthropy - Fundraising and Grantseeking

What are you proud of as a lecturer?

My course (HHS-407, Fund Raising and Grant Seeking in Health and Human Services) was practice-based before practiced-based learning (PBL) was cool. From the beginning, the course was designed as an active learning experience in fundraising and seeking grants. Students in this course do a series of assignments that would be their work product if they were already employed in the field. The hands-on skills they gain, and the portfolio they build, give our students a leg up in a nonprofit job market in which it can be very difficult to stand out for early career jobs.

What might others not know about you?

I'm trained as a political scientist, but I spent time as a US diplomat specializing in economic and commercial affairs, with assignments to DC and Bogota, and temporary duty in Tokyo.

What is something that you are proud of outside your role as a lecturer?

Since 2012, I've done the only annual study focused on the specific fundraising challenges, opportunities, and trends faced by Michigan nonprofits. Reports from 2016 and later are available at: http://tinyurl.com/y2kzvx96

Michael invites students to sign up for his class, HHS-407 - Fundraising & Grantwriting - Section 001 this fall!
