Under the benefits program changes proposed by the UM administration, lecturers teaching a 79.9% load would pay drastically higher health-care premiums than those teaching an 80% load. Of course, such a 0.1% difference is unlikely in the real world. The difference would more likely be one section or perhaps one credit hour a semester. However, given that part-time lecturers are among the lowest paid faculty, ending up on the lower side of the 80% divide would be a financial disaster for some. Even those on the upper side would see a cut in total compensation.
