The LEO Union Council is urging the local's members to sign a petition to repeal Public Act 4 of 2011 (the new Emergency Manager law). LEO's state affiliate, AFT Michigan, also strongly supports the repeal effort. Earlier this year the legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a package of bills greatly expanding the role of an Emergency Manager. This legislation gives an Emergency Manager, appointed by the Governor, uprecendented powers to take over school boards and other local units of government. The Emergency Manager could decide to sell-off assets held by the community without any input from community or locally elected officials. The Emergency Manager can throw-out all contracts and raise taxes without a vote of the people. This is a bad law and endangers not just labor contracts, but also takes away local control and our right to vote for those who will be making decisions for our community. |
