From the Michigan AFL-CIO: On May 20, AFL-CIO President President Richard Trumka gave a major address at the National Press Club. Trumka spoke on the attacks here in Michigan and dozens of other states, and charted an aggressive independent approach by working people and their unions to build the power of working people in the workplace and in the political sphere. Here in Michigan, our lawmakers are levying taxes on pensions, eliminating tax credits for the poor and cutting vital money from our school districts and communities - all to fund a $1.8 billion tax credit for corporations. Read key statements from the speech. |
"We'll only win investments in our future if we again embrace the idea that we are one national community. That our very identity is bound up with the promise that all of us have a voice—in the workplace, at the ballot box—and that we are responsible in a deep sense for each other. The fabric of our government, our democratic republic, is about making that responsibility for each other real." -- Richard Trumka.
