The LEO Vice President, Dr. Kirsten Herold, has been dismissed after 18 years of teaching. We believe that her dismissal is due to her Union activity. If you would like to show support please send a letter to the incoming Provost Philip Hanlon either through snail mail or email. You can also send a letter(or just CC) to the University President, Mary Sue Coleman, the Dean of LSA Terrence McDonald and/or the Chair the English Department Michael Schoenfeldt. (Read on for addresses and suggestions.) To send your message via AFT Michigan's Get Active web site, follow this link: http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/leo.

Below is a guide to what could be said in your letter. Please feel free to express your discontent in any way you feel appropriate.
I’m writing to protest the firing of a long term lecturer and LEO’s Vice President, Kirsten Herold. The circumstance of her dismissal leads us to believe that she was failed because of her union involvement. Kirsten’s main failing has been that she is a good Union leader.
Kirsten has worked for the University since 1992. Until lecturers formed a union, the English department was happy hiring her term to term with no job security. When the new LEO contract mandated 3 year appointments for long term lecturers, the department suddenly became dissatisfied with her work.
The English department is hiding their union busting ways behind a flimsy veil of “academic judgment” and “rigorous standards of excellence”.
We believe that the University administration allowed this injustice to happen partly to retaliate for Kirsten’s leadership in union grievances, most notably last year’s salary grievance.
Firing an accomplished lecturer who has improved the writing of 1000’s of graduates of UM is not acceptable. Firing an accomplished union leader during bargaining is also not acceptable.
Take the time to do what right: rectify this injustice, reinstate Kirsten Herold! |
