Fixed-term faculty band together
Friday, 20 March 2009 20:37

Activists drawn from the ranks of non tenure-track faculty around the country have recently formed an organization which they have dubbed, "The New Faculty Majority: The National Coalition for Adjunct and Contingent Equity." The organizers noted that adjunct and contingent faculty now account for 70% of college teaching faculty nationwide.

The organization is not a labor union, though it shares some of the general goals of unions such as LEO -- as is evidenced by its slogans: "Equal Pay for Equal Work! Defend Our Teachers!"
The New Faulty Majority's stated aim is to  "represent the interests of and advocate for non-tenure-track faculty at colleges and universities nationwide."  The approach appears to be one of organizing and advocacy without the added dimensions of a strictly defined bargaining unit and legal representation that a union brings. There is, however, the promise of working with unions for the good of all.
