Lecturers' Employee Organization
Local 6244 AFT Michigan, AFL-CIO
LEO was formed in 2002-2003 to promote the work-place interests and well-being of non tenure-track faculty at The University of Michigan. The local is run by its members, and seeks both to enhance their professional status and their contributions to quality public higher-education at Michigan and beyond.
The local represents approximately 1,500 lecturers on the University's three campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint), and is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, AFT Michigan, and the AFL-CIO.
LEO members ratified their first collective bargaining agreement in 2004 and their latest in 2013. As a result of their united efforts, LEO lecturers have made significant gains in salary, job security and professional recognition. They have also formed a new and vital community of educators across the three campuses.
