Steve Wandmacher (L) and Jim Anderson LEO members met on Wednesday and Thursday this week, and voted for Stevens Wandmacher, Lecturer III of Philosophy, to be the next LEO Campus Chair for UM-Flint. Wandmacher succeeds Jim Anderson, Lecturer IV of English, who has been Campus Chair since the creation of the union in 2003. Anderson stepped down voluntarily to "give someone else a chance and help the organization grow. A union can't be a one-man band." But he plans to remain active in LEO. "I am on the Communications Committee, and oversee the webpage. I will help out with grievances and anything else Steve needs me to do. I also plan to work hard on bargaining for the next contract." Before becoming Campus Chair, Anderson was a leading volunteer organizer for LEO at UM-Flint. In April 2004, he led the first and only faculty strike in the history of the Flint campus. Shortly afterward the walkout, LEO concluded its historic first contract with the university. "Steve will be a great leader for LEO," Anderson commented. "Nobody was forcing him to take this on. He really wants to do it and make a difference for the lecturers here and all the campuses." For his part, Wandmacher pledged to strengthen and expand the steward system in Flint. "I also want to do something about those annual reviews," he said. "They're too much!" Steve Wandmacher will assume the duties of chair on April 1. |
